In actuality, achieving this ideal has been proven MORE difficult and elusive in the United States than in many other countries in the world.

Socially, the American Dream is that all races and creeds live side-by-side without conflict. That, in my opinion, is also a pipe-dream. However, New York City proves that living side-by-side, WITH a bit of conflict, makes for a more realistic, yet fulfilling life experience for those willing and brave enough to submit to it.Dewey Chaffeehttp://www.ourgloriousgotham.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3742591784346076543.post-64112289060369390702012-06-28T20:38:08.546-04:002012-06-28T20:38:08.546-04:00Very cool! He spoke of going straight there every day after school, sitting down to a snack, doing his homework and then beginning work in the diner where he was needed, cooking, cleaning, waiting, bussing, etc. I asked him if he received a salary. "Yes, of course! I got a roof over my head, clothes on my back, medical/dental care and a full stomach three + times a day. I was well paid." I think this attitude is fabulous and I wish kids today had it instead of the typical unearned sense of entitlement.Robin's Egg Bleuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07940955157144789351noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3742591784346076543.post-21663524387318626982012-06-19T09:19:29.154-04:002012-06-19T09:19:29.154-04:00My mother's family would get blankets and pill...My mother's family would get blankets and pillows and sleep in the park (Crotona Park)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3742591784346076543.post-71452883298844502192012-05-07T08:01:19.710-04:002012-05-07T08:01:19.710-04:00Very interesting! You can really see how the working classes may have butted heads with reformers on the issue of child labor, which seems likely to have been important to sustaining many families. Even if it paid very little or if it was unpaid household work such as women performed, the extra pennies and extra hands of the children to help make ends meet may have seemed far more important than attending school, where surely other costs were incurred. Great piece.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3742591784346076543.post-2801840215450650482012-05-04T14:52:53.930-04:002012-05-04T14:52:53.930-04:00You need a chicken-wire sifter. He was born there in 1913. He told me two kids could get into the movies for a nickel when he was a kid. The game was, you stood out front of the theatre and yelled, "I got two, who's got t'ree?" until it got close enough to show time for a kid with three cents to be willing to be the heavy lifter. It was a game of chicken, and if you won you would have a whole penny, and you could buy what he described as "a big bag of candy."Gail Gutradthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12742236590998380829noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3742591784346076543.post-1019122530928515932012-03-09T13:54:29.715-05:002012-03-09T13:54:29.715-05:00Seriously...now I need to go get some halvah, stat...Seriously...now I need to go get some halvah, stat!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3742591784346076543.post-12772637955551815762012-03-09T12:50:21.893-05:002012-03-09T12:50:21.893-05:00This makes me want to out and get halvah--a favori...This makes me want to out and get halvah--a favorit when I was a kid!robin heaneynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3742591784346076543.post-78402165097007851382012-02-29T13:26:03.814-05:002012-02-29T13:26:03.814-05:00Laureen, what a wonderfully told story.
